“Look at all the lonely people,” sang the Beatles. I find it hard not to be drawn to lonely people when in coastal resorts. In amongst the seasonal seaside madness are elderly people being left behind. It stirs up an emotion of sadness for them and concern for one’s own isolation in later life.

I wanted to convey their sense of loneliness and isolation using candid images. Firstly, in high season, where I find lonely men and women lost in the cracks between exuberant families. Secondly, out of season, where their loneliness seems amplified between stormy skies and empty seafronts. Recognising loneliness is far from exact. However, the people I observed here appeared to have an unfair share of it.
