In 2024, I did my first ‘Abstraction’ eBook. Folders of experimental work continued to build. In parallel, my Documentary and Street photography images used an increasing amount of black negative space to isolate the central subject. I wanted to try the same technique of using deep blacks for my more abstract images.
Here then are 12 different genre on which I applied a more abstract dimension. Like all experiments, some work better than others. First came my table-top experiments around the house: pottery, glass, plants, household objects. I even re-visited my Covid images and took them a step further in terms of their drama. I found harsh light was my friend: low sunlight pouring in through windows created strong shadows and squeezed out mid-tones. Then I found lines - creating the highest levels of minimalism and negative space.
Next, I went further afield. I have always loved panoramas for the impact of their wider vista. I wondered if I could make them more abstract – landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes. Here also, I visited the corners of subways and car parks for more Brutalist material to render into my Abstract Black.
